Sometimes a need for mediation arises within a group of people or between groups. Social tensions cause a lack of communication and contact between people, hindering the functioning of a community or feeding into conflict. Mediation for larger groups is used when the parties involved cannot be clearly defined. Situations where this type of mediation could be used may include for example negative atmosphere in the condominium, residents complaining a lot and often about each other, or clashes between individuals or groups in an area. This type of conflicts often have multiple causes and require the help of a professional mediator.
The model for mediation for larger groups created by the Community Mediation Centre has gained both national and international publicity. The mediation strategy used in Forssa in 2016-2017 (Forssan malli) was the winner of the European Crime Prevention Award (ECPA) in 2018.
